Perched above Downtown Austin in the storied Clarksville neighborhood, this circa-1915 stilted Craftsman bungalow proved that 700 sq. ft. can feel just as expansive as it can intimate. Ensconced in a canopy of surrounding indigenous trees, a singular military gear-inspired color palette camouflages the home into the significant surrounding views. Uninterrupted, a consistent truffle-inspired paint color wraps the walls, acting as a canvas for both the owner’s collection of contemporary art, and for pops of detail from the original architecture: Complementary refurbished wood flooring, and contrasting blue-mosaic tiles in the kitchen. In response to this core, established palette, custom leather-bound reeded tatami mats trail between each turn of the floor, and the bath becomes a cocoon of base metals and waxed canvas. Custom window coverings in natural textiles act as a variable scrim, diffusing natural light throughout the day, and a custom platform bed in warm wood unassumingly conceals substantial storage space.
